Facebook data audit completed by Ireland Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes
Our very own Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes has completed an audit that has led to Facebook agreeing to make signicant changes to its privacy settings for the majority of its 750m users worldwide.
The changes will include an opt-out for EU users for the site’s ‘auto-tagging’ feature, and a commitment from Facebook to offer users clearer guidance on exactly what data they are giving the site by signing up to use it.
These changes are to be rolled out in the first three months of 2012, and will be under constant review thereafter.
The new privacy regime will apply to the accounts of all users whose services are provided by Facebook Ireland Ltd – which is the official service provider for all Facebook users outside the US and Canada.
A Facebook spokesman said, however, that many of the changes brought about by the audit would be adopted on a worldwide basis.
Facebook will also clarify its data user policy to ensure greater transparency, and will take steps to limit the data it collects from ‘social plugins’ such as the site’s trademark ‘Like’ button – agreeing to delete most data almost immediately after it is collected.
It also says it will reduce the amount of time that it retains ‘deleted’ data such as friend requests and photo tagging.
Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes said the audit had laid “challenging recommendations” for Facebook to pursue, and that it was unlikely Facebook would be in breach of any data protection law if those recommendations were fully adopted.

Are you ready for the era of ‘Big Data’?
Radical personalisation, co-creation, constant experimentation, and new business models will be the hallmarks of competition as companies capture and analyse huge volumes of data. David Connor of eightytwenty/4d explains what you should know about the era of Big Data.
Data has characterised the information age from the start. It underpins processes that track purchases and sales; and it offers clues about how customers will behave.
But over the last few years, the volume of data has exploded. Reams of data flow from financial transactions and customer interactions but also cascade in at unparalleled rates from new devices and social networks. Just think about what could be happening at your own company right now: with marketers scanning social media or using location data from smartphones to understand buying habits.
Big data will cut across business units and function, representing a key basis for competition. Therefore companies need to start thinking in earnest about whether they are organized to exploit big data’s potential and to manage the threats it can pose. Success will demand not only new skills but also new perspectives on how the era of big data could evolve—the widening circle of management practices it may affect and the foundation it represents for new, potentially disruptive business models. eightytwenty/4D mobile application will help Irish people with asthma manage their condition
eightytwenty/4D have won a competitive tender to create mobile and web applications for the Asthma Society of Ireland that will provide people with asthma with tools to manage their condition on the go. Over 450,000 people in Ireland suffer from asthma. The condition can be managed through medication and healthy lifestyles, but for many people it can be difficult to juggle busy schedules and proper care for their condition. The new mobile application will allow people with asthma set reminders to ensure they use inhalers and measure their peak flow regularly, while the application’s diary function will allow them to record their symptoms for themselves and their GPs.
